Panic Attacks?
Does anybody suffer from panic attacks / agrophobia?
I just got diagnosed with it around a month ago it was ruining my life. Im now on medication which has helped but just makes me sleep too much & have no energy, anybody have more information about this disorder?

Well first of all you should try to figure out the triggers of the attacks. Avoid any trigger that you can think of. If they are bad enough you should go to the doctor and get something to help out with them. They are awful I get them too, as well as my husband. Make sure you talk to someone about it though.

I know it may sound lame but when I get them I try to sit up right and just concentrate on my breathing . In and out at the right tempo.

You need to stop what you are doing, obviously, and take deep breaths. Try to clear your mind and focus on your breathing. It takes practice but you need to teach yourself to relax.

During a panic attack, try to realize that what you are experiencing is a panic attack and that you are ok.
A few medications seem to act quickly. One is ativan which can start working in about 5 minutes.

Try to analyze what the underlying nature of the panic before they become an attack. For instance, if you have test anxiety, visualize yourself doing well on the test and hearing everyone you respect tell you you’re doing a great job. Prior to a panic attack, write down your own advice to talk yourself through it and memorize your own advice. Of course, seek counseling if it’s reallly that bad.

I use the "Take a deep breath through your nose and out through you mouth slowly" method, Relax your shoulders and breath like this a couple of times… works great for me. if you are at home "Shake it lose" relax your whole body by Closing your eyes softly and doing the breathing excercise. Practice meditating that works miracles.

take deep breathes and let them out slowly on the count of ten. Try to evaluate the stressor that caused the panic attack and remove it at all cost. Talk yourself through the attack by thinking on positives at not negatives. There is a book by David M. Burns called "new mood therapy for depression". I’m noit implying that you are depressed, however this book helps you correct distorted thinking patterns learned from our youth. It’s not expensive and I think Barnes and Noble carry it.

I understand where you are coming from. I have a lot of panic/anxiety attacks…..and at first I couldn’t control them, but as time went by I learned how take control. I don’t suggest medication because then you will NEVER be able to overcome you problem. Its all about knowing yourself and having control. Try relaxing in a hot bath for an hour every night before you go to bed. Use this time to think things out…..plan….clear your mind. Whatever. It takes time to regain control so during this time…..learn about anxiety…research it and stuff. Also try to figure out why this is happening. have you been through any changes….traumatic events? anything? Sometimes your body reacts to things and you won’t even realize it. I promise it will all pass.

When you feel a panic attack coming on, don’t fight it just accept it. If you feel like your going to die just be prepared to die. Sounds crazy but it stops the panic.

The best way to stop a panic attack is to breath through it. First you must practice your breathing exercises when you are not having a panic attack…when you are calm….that way they will come easier when you are having one. While it is going on keep reminding yourself that you’ve been through it before, and that you will survive….you will not die….it will pass. Remind yourself of these things while doing your deep breathing.

Panic Attacks do not happen in a vacuum. They occur because we are either thinking about what is going to happen in the future or the past. The way I avoid anxiety is to identify the source of it. For instance if I procrastinate in paying my bills It will prey on my mind and cause anxiety. Practice living in the here and now. If you catch yourself thinking about the future you must immediately block your mind of the future and concentrate on the moment. Take care of the problems that may be creating your anxiety. Avoid caffiene if possible as it only aggravates the problem. But it takes lots of practice to stay in the moment.The future will take care of itself only if you take care of it today.I would not recommend anti-anxiety medication because they are addictive and the withdrawel effects are frightening to say the least.

Yes…..I get them often…..my throat does the same thing…..and i get extremely light headed and my arms get tingly and numb and hurt a bit……I feel very sick to my stomach and i have to go somewhere and be by myself till it goes away…….hope everything goes ok with you

That sounds about right. But many of the feelings of a panic attack are brought on by the body not getting enough oxygen. You panic, your body tenses and you breathe shallow, and your body needs more air.
So when you feel one coming on, you need to force yourself to take deep breathes. Exhaling to expel used air is more important than taking deep breaths in. I’ve found that singing helps quite a bit, because it makes you do just that.

Make sure it is a panic attack. It is also the primary symptom of anaphylactic shock, so you may have a mild allergic reaction to something that you confuse with a panic attack. A mild allergic reaction can set you up for a serious allergic reaction in your next encounter with the allergen, and that requires getting to an emergency room stat!

yes, i’ve had them. I went to the dr. put me on xanax and anti depressants, did that for a year or so, now only on xanax when i need it, maybe 2x’s a month?

Most people in state of panic attack usually feel sensations of shortness of breath, feeling of choking…all u need is someone to be by ur side to reassure u that it is not the end of the world. if u r alone, dnt breath quickly as if trying to force air inside, this will make it worst, instead, relax n breath in slowly, feel the air going into ur lungs…

Yes. I use to get them all the time. Felt like I was having a heart attack. I use to drink a glass of water and take slow deep breathes in through the nose out of the mouth. I have them now but only once in a while. And if I slow down and think things through with taking a step back from the situation and breathing they don’t last as long and sometimes I can get enough control to only start getting them. Meditation will help yoga and other forms of relaxation will help.

Panic attacks!!!!!?
I have had panic attacks for a while this last year I have had 3 really bad attacks and it is so scary it feels as though you are dying. You can’t breath, your sight is shrinking, and not to mention the way your heart feels as though it skips a beat and flutters. I am so tired of taking pills such as xanax to control them. I am trying to figure out what is triggering them and I have bo idea what it may be….

You need to talk to a therapist. Medication does not always work. You need to learn stress management techniques, etc. Also, biofeedback may help. But see a therapist first!

Hello! I’ve suffered from panic attacks all my life. I’ve been on paxil for a few years now and it has helped, but other ways of easing these attacks can be deep breathing, I tell myself all the time that God is with me and will take them away, which helps. Xanax puts me to sleep…….. I’ve hard that yoga helps but I’ve never tried it. Hope this helps some. Take care!

Dont take xanax, it can make it worse. Try an SSRI Anti Depressant.Wellbutrin can make it worse as well. Prozac or zoloft is good. Initially during therapy, these can make you feel more nervous, but in the long run ( after 3-4 weeks) they make you feel a lot better.

i have panic attacks to i tried to control them with out meds but it didn’t work for me i only got worse ,i did get off xanax the doctor put me on ativan it helps some but they still keep coming back daily several times a day ,i have dealt with this for 10 yrs or more ,mine are triggered by stress and agitation ,i wish you luck and hope you find the help you are looking for

You really need to talk to a therapist. I used to have major panic attacks, especially when I tried to go out to dinner or right before an exam. I take Klonopin for mine but if you don’t want to take pills, you need to find someone to talk to about what makes you anxious. Being aware of what triggers the attacks can help you control them.
Yoga and meditation will help. Especially meditation because you’re still and you’re focusing on breathing (yoga also focuses a lot on breathing). Meditation will help you train your mind to listen which I know sounds weird but after time, you can control where your mind goes thus preventing it from going to that place that makes you feel like someone is choking the air out of you and the room is closing in on you.
It’s really hard to do at first and just try it for five minutes a day twice a day at first. It can also get very frustrating which kind of defeats the purpose but if you’ll stay with it, you’ll benefit from it in the long run. I used some audio I downloaded that had ocean waves rolling in and out and tried to think about my breathing and seeing the waves come in and go back out.
Make sure you breathe from your diaphragm meaning put your hand on the place where your rib cage makes an arch. As you breathe in, this needs to expand and breathe in until you think you can’t hold anymore air – then do it a little more. Count how long it took you to breathe in and exhale for twice as long. For example, if you inhaled for a count of 9, exhale for a count of 18. It doesn’t have to be seconds – just do it to your own rythym and be consistent in your counting.
I wish you all the best and highly recommend talking to a therapist because honestly, learning the situations and other things that trigger my panic attacks really gave me an upper hand on controling them. The best advice I can give is to get it under control now because if you don’t, in all likelihood, it will only get worse as the years go by.

Relaxation techniques and deep breathing exercises help. You also need to remove yourself from the area or situation as soon as you feel one coming on. I have suffered from them for years and what works best for me is to remove myself from the room, sit down and breathe deeply, close my eyes and rub the web between my forefinger and thumb in gentle circles. This is reflexology and it helps alot. I have also learned that if I don’t get the proper rest or eat a balanced diet, they seem to be worse. I hope you try it and it works for you!!!!!

Hi. I have been suffering from anxiety disorder since 2000. It was during a very stressful period in my life. The panic attack made me feel like I was having a heart attack, which is what I called 911 for. I felt so crazy when they told me I was only hyperventilating/having a panic attack. And once you have one panic attack, the fear of another sets you up for multiple attacks. It was difficult for me for awhile. I was put on medications and I wasn’t really ready at that time for that kind of thing. Since, i have always been against putting chemicals into my body. My attacks are not due to a chemical imbalance, so they put me on medications they thought would just calm me and relieve stress. I fought against the meds, and my attacks increased. I wasn’t sleeping because I thought I was going to die. I finally just accepted I needed the medication and gave it a try. After a month I hadn’t had any attacks. Then I began to worry I was being weak because I couldn’t maintain normal existence without medication. But a friend of mine made me look at it a different way. We wouldn’t encourage someone with bipolar syndrome to not take their medication or someone who has seizures to try something outside of what the doctor prescribed. I’m not sure what your reasons are for trying to get off your meds, but if they work…why would you want to? Breathing methods have proven quite effective, since you are only hyperventilating. It demands a great deal of discipline, because you have to change your thinking. Your mind is registering this as you dying. You may think you know you are not, but the brain works in mysterious ways. There are several online sites that help you practice the breathing through the nose like you are smelling a rose technique and expelling out of the mouth like blowing through a straw. I get most anxious at night, before bed and frankly I don’t have the discipline needed to say screw it to my ativan and trying out some breathing excercises. Panic attacks, well not everyone suffers from them so not everyone knows how it feels. I’ve had a few myself and they not so nice. The only thing I can suggest is if you feel like you starting to tense up then just sit back, breathe and try relax. I have’nt taken medication for mine, think the best thing to do is if you feel it coming on just try relax and take a few deep breaths. It helps me.

Panic Attacks could be from stress or past situations which can lead to depression, or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. You could think about hypnosis, or accupuncture for an alternative to medication also stress management to learn relaxing techniques.

Smoking and cafeine can trigger them but most people even therapist just do not have a handle yet on panic attacks.I started them decades ago when people thought you were plain nuts and Valium was given which saved my life at that time. Now my children have it and it breaks my heart. Both are on medication but my son sleeps a lot from the meds. After 7 years mine went the way they came , just left. My life style had not changed nor anything else. People who do not have panic attacks just do not understand how bad this can be. I hope you have somebody around you who understands.
My son is even on dissability, he can’t work because of the attacks. These are real. Find a great therapist to work with you so you can learn some techniques. Not all of them work but some do help. My good thoughts are going your way.

Panic Attacks?
I suffer from panic attacks fairly frequently at the minute, they’re very specific, only happen at night when I’m in bed. I see a psychiatrist for depression and anxiety problems and I spoke to her about my panic attacks yesterday. She gave me some suggestions to deal with them, one of which was to get up out of bed when it happened. But when they do happen I feel totally paralysed with fear, and I believe that if I move, I’ll make the "bad thing" happen. I know it’s totally irrational, but at that moment I just CANNOT move at all. Has anyone else ever experienced this? And if so, how do you overcome it? And even if you haven’t experienced exactly this, what did you find the best way to cope with panic attacks?
I’ve been seeing my psychiatrist regularly for a year. I have problems with social phobia and I think that’s why she hasn’t referred me on to anyone else, she knows it would take me a long time before I could talk to them, so she’s just working with me instead. I’m on venlafaxine for my depression, and she did suggest that I could try buspirone for my panic attacks if they don’t improve. She did give other suggestions as well as getting out of bed, but that’s the most specific problem I have, in that I literally can’t move at all when I’m having a panic attack for fear that it will cause something bad to happen.

Panic Attacks will usually not last for a long period of time. Durig my attacks I have taken deep breaths and sat down to try and get my balance. Good Luck, I know this is a strange thing to be experiencing. Hopefully they will not be a longterm thing.

i did experience something similar to that and it happened also at night when i was in bed i felt paralyzed and i felt the whole bed rocking i was sure there was an earthquake! and my eyes were open but i couldn’t see anything i do not know how it really started i was part asleep already and it felt like i was somewhere in between reality and dreams it lasted only for a couple of minutes but it felt like forever and when it was over i was cold and sweating,,,there was no way i can get out of bed during the attack i couldn’t sleep that night and thank god i didn’t experience that again but i blamed it on stress and the day after that i skipped my classes at university and just relaxed that helped a lot i don’t have any problems with depression and i don’t really see a relation between the two ma bye you need to relax find away to release stress taking long walks helps me

This sounds a little "off" but it is what my psychologist told me. And he is THE BEST. Scream, and yell, and run.
Meaning…..scream into a pillow, or somewhere where you won’t scare everyone. And, if you can….get busy….exercise that extra adrenalin off. Run if you can, or do some vigorous activity.

I have anxiety/panic attacks. The symptoms are virtually the same for most people. For me,I first can feel my face getting hot,then my arms and legs get tingly and yes sometimes a paralyzed feeling. Then if I would let the panic take control, my breathing gets unstable to the point of barely being able to catch my breath,my heart would start to race,I’d get nauseous,start trembling and feel like passing out.
It is the fear that is causing you to have this feeling of pluralization. Try to remember that even though you have this fear that something bad is going to happen;nothing has actually happened to you. As you are first stating to have a feeling of an attack coming on,focus all of your strength to your mind and your breathing. Start by taking deep breath in and slowly blow it out into your hands. On the breath in say’re’,and on the breath out say’lax’. Re-lax. Start to gradually slow your breathing down,until you are breathing normally. If you do this,it helps you be in control of the fear,instead of the fear taking control of you. Close your eyes and just relax. I actually prefer to be lying down while doing this,but if your bed is where you are having the attacks,then your psychiatrist is right,you need to distance yourself from the place you are having the attacks. As soon as you feel the first symptoms coming on,move to a different place. This will disassociate your fear from your bedroom and it will be a safe place,not a scary one.
I don’t know how long you have had your attacks or been seeing your psychiatrist,but, I am surprised that she hasn’t suggested seeing a psychologist or a therapist to help you work on relaxation techniques. Another thing is that there are many medications available to help control chronic anxiety/panic and depression. It surprises me that she hasn’t offered you more options than ‘get out of bed’!
The best way that I personally cope? I started meds 2 years ago. This has virtually eliminated my attacks. I also see my psychologist at least once a month,even if I’m not having attacks. I started to see him to learn new ways to breathe,and ways to control the fear. I now see him just to talk and sometimes work on new options,as I am trying to get off one of the meds I’ve been taking.

Edit: 4/20 Thanks for adding the additional details. So,if you have a social phobia,are you slightly agoraphobic also? Do you tend to want to stay away from people,stay safe in the comfort of your own home? If you answered yes,then you and your psychiatrist need to focus on more than just the anxiety itself. Agoraphobia is the end result of untreated anxiety/panic attacks and can lead to paranoia and depression. If you can’t get out of your bed,that is OK. Just practice the breathing and as the other person said the visualization too. There are many types of visualization and breathing exercises that are very helpful during an attack,especially when you learn to use them properly. As soon as you feel it coming on,start these techniques. You do have a warning signal of some sort,don’t you? Your Psychiatrist can help you with these exercises also and give you more suggestions. I would however consider giving a psychologist a chance. Perhaps in the future,when you feel more comfortable.
What is the ‘bad thing’? Has it ever happened in reality? If your bad thing has actually happened,you could be having anxiety over an unresolved issue.
It is a great thing that you see your Psychiatrist regularly. This in itself is a step in the right direction. However,if this has gone on for a year and you’re not feeling better,you either need to be seeing someone else who will better deal with your issues or talk to her about possibly starting a different type of drug treatment therapy.
Venalfaxine is the same thing as Effexor. It increases the levels of the neurotransmitters,serotonin and dopamine in the brain.
Buproprion is the same as Wellbutrin. It increases the levels of the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain.You can see for yourself that both of these meds increase the serotonin levels. Personally,I think you’d be better off taking either a higher dosage of the Effexor first,if you already aren’t at the max. If you are,then I’d suggest to try a different SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) Some of the best on the market are Paxil,Prozak,Zoloft and Celexa,just to name a few. Please talk to your Psychiatrist soon to go over other treatment options.
You shouldn’t have to live like this. No one should! That is why there are so many meds available to treat these problems.

Panic disorder or attacks are intense and sudden feelings of fear and anxiety. An attack wil cause many physical symptoms such as rapid heart beat, trembling, rapid shallow breathing, pins and needles in the arms and feeling faint. Many people who have a panic attack fear that they will collapse or die but panic attacks are not harmful.
One effective method for controlling a panic attack involves deep breathing and visualization. Most people will experience a warning that an attack is imminent and at that point it’s important to relax as much as possible.
I’m sure your doctor has taught you deep breathing exercises by now and I cannot stress enough how important this is. Visualization involves picking an image and exploring it in some detail with your mind’s eye. The point of focusing intently on the details of the image is to redirect your attention from the attack to something safe.
Let’s use a picture of a stop sign. "Stop" is an efective word to focus on during an attack but the sign itself is important too. As you are doing your deep breathing, focus on the details of that stop sign…imagine every letter…S…T…O…P…focus on the colours of the sign…the shape of the sign…
The point of this exercise is:
1.) Deep breathing for physical relaxation
2.) Visualization for re-establishing control over your body.Try to adopt the attitude that you will NOT allow these attacks to control you.
Practice this technique on a regular basis at times when you aren’t experiencing an attack.

How long have you been having these? I find interesting that it only happens at night in your bed. Maybe you were abused and don’t remember, when you sleep then your body could be going into a defensive state,"maybe if I don’t move nothing will happen" Another thing is that if you’re sleep deprived it can trigger stress breathing/hyperventilating, which can cause panic attacks, this happened to me after my son was born and I was up every two hours, it got progressively worse to the point that I thought I was having a heart attack and I went to hospital, had tests done and they told me it was a panic attack induced by hyperventilating in my sleep.

I agree with everyone about the deep breathing exercises. That will help get your body out of its "fight or flight" mode.
The next thing I might try is to actually think about what (if anything) in particular could be bothering you. We live such stressful lives that nowadays many issues just go unchecked and unexamined, and this "daytime debris" sometimes surfaces when we try to be the most relaxed. I know whenever I have my panic attacks at night (in bed also, might I add), I can usually pinpoint what triggers them and devise some coping strategies for them. For instance, I’m having trouble finding a new job, so I just tell myself that money isn’t really that important in the scheme of things; finding a career I enjoy and good health are much more valuable and obviously it’s unhealthy to let something like a menial job effect my well-being in such a way!
If the panic attacks are purely physical in nature, I would suggest some chamomile and/or valerian tea, and perhaps new medication if what you’re taking doesn’t seem to be working for you. Also, explore relaxation techiniques like yoga, meditation, listening to music, etc. I hope this was helpful!

i’ve been having the worst panic attack…it started last night when i tried to go to bed, but couldn’t because i was shaking so much and couldn’t breathe or swallow. i finally fell asleep and was okay this morning, but it started up again when i was on my way to work. i came back home and am waiting for my mom to come get me. i don’t know where to go, i don’t have health insurance (am self-employed) and i don’t want to be checked into some kind of facility. i just want some help! has anyone ever had anything like this that’s lasted for so long? i’ve had anxiety, but never has it affected me so much. thanks for the help.

i used to have panic attacks alot so much a couldn’t go out until i got a Walkman and put one head phone on i found the music distracted me enough so i didn’t panic but i could still hear what was going on though my other ear

This use to happen to me…my doctor told me to do yoga in my spare time and practice regulating my breathing, so when I would start having an attack I would begin doing my yoga breathing and feel better

get some help and have an early night and get some sleep try and calm yourself whatever/whenever you feel either stressed or tired

one of the things that helped me was that you KNOW that you are ok. nothing is going on, your body is just overreacting. the WORST thing you can do is consume caffine, so don’t have ANY at ALL and my attacks have gotten better. also, keep away from things that bother you emotionally. for me, it’s war movies/stories. talk to someone, don’t let things eat at you, get it off your chest. if it comes from depression, you need to do something to get un-depressed. if possible, start on anti-depressants, they’ve helped me A LOT. but whatever it is making you uneasy, try to get away from it, or shrik it in your own mind, but just know that nothing is happening to you. i try to get cool air and watch TV or something to distract me from not being able to breathe. and there is something about night that makes them 1000% worse, so try sleeping pills to sleep, and they can help during the day.

Are you stressed out about something? Can you do something that easies your mind? There are medications for this if it scares you. Sometimes they are easy to get over, sometimes they continue for years. They won’t check you into a facility. Breathing 10 deep breaths from your diaphram helps. Find out if even of your family has panic attacks and what they do about it. I set a timer, and allow myself 15 minutes of wigging out time. Then I say it’s time to move on.

You might have something called Aspergers Syndrome. It’s a type of mild syndrome similar to Autism. For example, if a person looks at you funny, you could just break out crying. If you can’t get something right the first time, you might get fustrated with it and quit. Even though you don’t have health insurance, you might want to check with a mental therepist and see. If you find out you do have it, you could actually feel a lot better.

had them since 1999.. i was on zoloft & lexotan for 3months and i stopped taking them.. i was on it again last 2003 for a month and i felt kinda better.. but i’ve been having those attacks again lately.. and they’re really bad! i couldn’t even get to work.. but im on zoloft and xanax now.. although they make me feel really weird but i don’t have any other choice if i still want to live a normal life..

Well, i have this disorder also, and i know how you feel. So instead of taking all of the medication i took half of it, and it worked just as good! =]

I have panic attacks to. I don’t however have agorophobia. It takes your body a few months to get used to the drug levels even in your body. And since you have only been diagnosed and started taking meds a month ago, you’re probably just weening on.
You will be fine. Those side effects go away. And if they don’t maybe you just need to swicth to another drug. I was on 2 before I found my nitche.

I have both along with anxiety and Bi polar, It’s hard, I understand, but as long as you keep tabs with your doctors/psychs. and they have you on the right meds and right amount of meds. go to group counseling and look info. up on the computer, the moe you know about it the more you’ll know how to live with it and take care of yourself.

I had panic attacks in high school, tell your doctor your medicine is draining you, they can give you different samples to get you on the right one. I was on pamelor but before that the doctor gave me one that I littlerally slept from 9pm to almost 11am the next morning. And was groggy after that.
However the pills they give you are sleeping pills, the reason for this is to help you to relax because anxiety is worsened when you are fatigued, eventually I got off the medicine just because I forgot to take it.
I still have panic attacks everyonce in a while. You have to just figure out what triggers them, like me , if I bottle everything up and don’t confront it I have one.
Panic attacks can also be hereditery, my grandmother had them, so did my uncle and my cousin, my mom has had them for years but didn’t realize what they were up until about 5 years ago. They won’t ruin your life if you don’t let them. You just have to challenge your self a bit and dig until you find why your having them, seek out a therepist that can help you dig.

well I did had panic attacks about 12 years ago…It was so bad that I used to sit at the emergency room thinking that I was having a heart attack. Doctors prescribe me xanax and it got worse. What I found out my husband was giving me a lot of stress so I got rid of him and everything just stop.Do you have something in your life giving you stress??Here is some information on that. The panic attack is a period of intense fear or psychological distress, typically of abrupt onset and lasting no more than thirty minutes. Symptoms may include trembling, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, sweating, nausea, dizziness, hyperventilation, paresthesias (tingling sensations), and sensations of choking or smothering. Repeated and apparently unprovoked panic attacks may be a sign of panic disorder, but panic attacks are associated with other anxiety disorders as well. For example, people who suffer from phobias may experience panic attacks upon exposure to certain triggers.
Panic disorder is real and potentially disabling, but it can be controlled. Because of the disturbing symptoms that accompany panic disorder, it may be mistaken for heart disease or some other life-threatening medical illness. This misconception often aggravates or triggers future attacks. People frequently go to hospital emergency rooms when they are having a panic attack, and extensive medical tests may be performed to rule out these other conditions, thus creating further anxiety.
Treatment for panic disorder includes medications and a type of psychotherapy known as cognitive-behavioral therapy, which teaches people about the nature of panic attacks, the cycles of negative thoughts, and demonstrates ways to interrupt the panic process.
Medications can be used to break the psychological connection between a specific phobia and panic attacks. Medications can include antidepressants (SSRI’s, MAOI’s, etc.) taken every day, or anti-anxiety drugs (benzodiazepines, e.g. — Valium, Ativan, Xanax, etc.) during or in anticipation of panic attacks. Exposure to the phobia trigger multiple times without a resulting panic attack (due to medication) can often break the phobia-panic pattern, allowing people to function around their phobia without the help of medications. However, minor phobias that develop as a result of the panic attack can often be eliminated without medication through monitored cognitive-behavioral therapy or simply by exposure. The decision to participate in this therapy personally or through a registered practitioner should always be made in conjunction with a medical professional.
Often, a combination of psychotherapy and medications produces good results. Some improvement may be noticed in a fairly short period of time–about 6 to 8 weeks. Thus appropriate treatment by an experienced professional can prevent panic attacks or at least substantially reduce their severity and frequency–bringing significant relief to 70 to 90 percent of people with panic disorder. [2] Relapses may occur, but they can often be effectively treated just like the initial episode.
In addition, people with panic disorder may need treatment for other emotional problems. Clinical depression has often been associated with panic disorder, as have alcoholism and drug addiction. About 30% of people with panic disorder use alcohol and 17% use drugs such as cocaine or marijuana to alleviate the anguish and distress caused by their condition. Research has also suggested that suicide attempts are more frequent in people with panic disorder, although this research remains controversial.
As with many disorders, having a support structure of family and friends who understand the condition can help increase the rate of recovery. During an attack, it is not uncommon for the sufferer to develop irrational, immediate fear, which can often be dispelled by a supporter who is familiar with the condition. For more serious or active treatment, there are support groups for anxiety sufferers which can help people understand and deal with the disorder.
Other forms of treatment include journalling, in which a patient records their day-to-day activities and emotions in a log to find and deal with their personal stresses, and breathing exercises, such as diaphragmatic breathing. In some cases, a therapist may use a procedure called interoceptive exposure, in which the symptoms of a panic attack (such as hyperventilation) are induced in order to promote coping skills and show the patient that no harm can come from a panic attack. Stress-relieving activities such as tai-chi, yoga, and physical exercise can also help ameliorate the causes of panic disorder. Many physicians will recommend stress-management, time-management, and emotion-balancing classes and seminars to help patients avoid anxiety in the future.

Panic Disorder is a disorder in which your parasympathetic nervous system overreacts to no stimulation. In other words if you were in danger your heart would beat faster, you’d breathe quicker, you’d get dizzy, you’d want to run, you’d feel tingling in your arms and legs as the blood rushed into them for you to run, but with panic disorder there is no perceived danger and as such the body creates a panic attack. Panic disorder is usually biological but can be created by periods of prolonged stress.
The best way to handle a panic attack is to ride it out and breathe very deeply even though you feel light headed. Benzodiazepines, although highly addictive and are tolerated too quickly are the best solution for panic disorder. There are short and long acting drugs in this class for instance Ativan is a shorter acting drug that may help you for a couple of hours whereas clonazepam stays in your system and prevents the panic attacks from happening. In my opinion the latter is better in treating panic disorder. Also drugs called SSRI’s are used to treat panic disorder by influencing your brain chemistry, such drugs that are indicated for panic disorder are to name a few Prozac, Remeron, Effexor, Paxil and all come with side effects. For instance Remeron will make you want to sleep all the time whereas Prozac will give you a boost in energy.
As for agoraphobia it is simply the fear of being away from your comfort zone. For instance say your apartment is your safe place where panic attacks rarely happen, then leaving your apartment becomes scary because panic attacks happen in other places you go. Agoraphobia is treatable with exposure therapy, where you go out and go a little further each time. But progress is usually slow and takes time. Drugs such as Prozac can aid in dealing with agoraphobia although without exposure therapy they are of little value.

yes yes and yes! honey i have been dealing with these for 2 yrs…….i have a panic attack soo bad that i will feel like my throat is closing up and i will breathe fast and feel like i am gng to pass out and like i am having a heart attack. i take effexor and lithium and xanax and if i didnt have the xanax i wld be in the hospital every night like i used to. i wnt leave the house unless it is a place that is close to home. i wont go anywhere if a hospital is not nearby…it sux becuse poeple dnt understand and i get made fun of because f it. i cant drive, work r even be alone now…if u wld like to tlk genler100@yahoo.com…i know what ur gng through believe me ur not alone…….
